Winning Gold at the US Nationals Championship.
Winning at Senior Nationals was always just a dream of mine. For
years, I told myself that someday I would like to go to a National
Competition and compete. In October of 2006 I made a commitment to
go to Nationals the following year and I began training. After a
long road and many sore muscles I made it to San Jose. It being my
first time at a National level competition, I wasn’t expecting to
take the Gold. But after finding my brackets and seeing that I only
had one fight, my hopes jumped. Being guaranteed at least a Silver
medal takes some of the pressure off, but I will admit that I was
still nervous. I didn’t want to disappoint my Coach, or my
Instructors back home. As it turns out I was the first fight of the
day as well. Winning in a 3-2 victory at the last few seconds of
the fight only sweetened the victory.
Going through everything that I had to go
through to get that Gold medal was worth it. There were times that
I almost gave up due to injuries that I thought wouldn’t let me
fight as well as I should have been able to. But sticking through
it, giving it 110%, and letting God decide the outcome was such a
learning experience for me. I encourage any who has never been to a
National tournament to at least commit to going once. The lessons
you learn and take with you are more valuable than I can express in
words. |
